About M Drift Analyser, M3/M4 models and M Laptimer App
M Drift Analyser is a feature designed by BMW for M4 and M3 BMW M models launched late 2020, it collects data from performed drifts by drivers; the length of time, distance, and even the slip angle; then giving it a score out of five stars. Users can get highly competitive with it, trying to best their buddy’s rating.

A very complex feature to design
The big challenge was to understand how M Drift was designed to work on cars and adapt the user experience from car into mobile, keeping it as much simple, consistent and intuitive as possible. There were many concepts, business decisions and rules involved.
Overview:
This feature relies on a integration between M Laptimer app  and the native car function M Drift that will be available for the new M3/M4 cars that will be launched to market in 03/21;
By activating M Drift Analyser in the car and start there a M Drift Session, M Laptimer app will receive from the car all the data collected during the recording of M Drift Session;
By just activating the M Drift Analyser in the car and not starting the record of M Drift Session, M Laptimer app will just receive Drift Angles that will represent what we call an "Orphan Drift", since are specific Drift Angles that weren't achieved during a MDrift Session recording;
Single Drifts are Drift Angles achieved during a M Drift Session;
We call a "Drift Moment" either a M Drift Session or an Orphan Drift.
Feature rules:
- A M Laptimer Session can contain many M Drift Sessions and/or many Orphan Drifts;
- Orphan Drifts are drifts (specific drift angles) that don't belong to a M Drift Session;
- A M Drift Session can be present on a Route Session or on a Lap Session;
- A M Drift Session can start in a specific lap and end in another lap;
- One Lap or one Route of a M Laptimer Session can have more than one M Drift Sessions;
M Drift Flow for M Laptimer (vehicle + app)
When M Drift Analyser is fully setup and active on vehicle side and users iPhone is connected to vehicle, M Laptimer can check vehicle's compatibility with the feature and then promote and present the feature itself on the app.

Interface Details:
- The map on Session Details for M Drift Tab displays only highlights in orange to represent Single or Orphan Drifts that occurred in the current lap or route;
- During a M Laptimer session analysis, every time lap changes for the next one, the map updates to show the Single and/or Orphan Drift events that happened in that particular lap;
- Users can use the scrubber to move the CCP (current car position indicator) to the precise point where drift data was collected. Once that happens, we fill up M Drift tab with the collected data for that specific moment.
- Only Single and/or Orphan Drifts are represented in the map;
